BAD NEWS BITES - Post 13, Moving Toward 5,500 Problems, Updated Feb 11, 2020

I receive 30 global press fish farm/seafood industry newsletters every week. In these, I have found a startling amount of bad news, and decided to do a post on it. I had no idea there was as much bad news as there is. This is my thirteenth post in three years. And the last post ended at 5,000 problems, as I put 500 in each post before starting a new one. The Dec 20, 2018 post ended at 4,000 problems.

Some days I am stunned by the amount of bad news in the fish farm/seafood industry.  Find the fifth BAD NEWS BITES post here: http://fishfarmnews.blogspot.ca/2017/05/bad-news-bites-fifth-post.html. And that reaches 2,000.

This is the link to the fourth post, Jan 14, 2017, it has 500 BAD NEWS BITES in it: http://fishfarmnews.blogspot.ca/2017/01/bad-news-bites.html. it has links to the previous three posts since July 2015. You can find earlier ones at these links.

This is the link to the ninth post, March 29, 2018: http://fishfarmnews.blogspot.com/2018/03/bad-news-bites.html.

This is the link to the tenth post, Aug 9, 2018:  https://fishfarmnews.blogspot.com/2018/08/bad-news-bites-aug-20-2018.html.

Here is a summary of the bad news stories:

"In one mouthful, here are the kind of stories I am finding: boom bust industry, billions made and lost, crisis in lice and disease, bankruptcy, workers fired, executives jumping company to company, dividing big bonuses, fraud, corruption, litigation, conflict of interest with government and scientists, using the ocean as a free open sewer – $10.4 Billion in BC alone, killing of whales, seals and sea lions – more than 12,000 in BC so far, slavery, unpaid labour, taxpayers paying millions for diseased, dead fish – $177 Million in Canada, dueling scientists, weakening of laws, unsustainable feed, illegal fishing, jail sentences, disasters in Norway, Scotland, Chile, Canada, bullying of scientists, governments and anyone critical of their business, cartels, collusion, price fixing, fishing down the food chain to Antarctic krill, carcinogens and persistent organic pollutants, fluoroquinolones, chicken feathers in feed, animal feces in feed, eutrophication in a time of global warming, Malachite Green fungicide in USA seafood, fake industry awards, all the wild salmon in the Pacific ocean, more than a billion, put in peril... it goes on."

Update, Dec 11, 2017: I found 500 BAD NEWS BITES in less than 3.5 months. That means well over 1000 in a year. That is how much bad news there is in fish farms/seafood industry. This post, the sixth, may be found here: http://fishfarmnews.blogspot.ca/2017/08/bad-news-bites-salmonseafood-industry.html.

Update, Mar 29, 2018: You will find the previous posts on these dates: 23/1/2018, 11/12/17, 29/8/17. 5/5/17, 14/1/17, 1/7/16, 6/5/16,  1/7/15, and a total of nearly 3,500 BAD NEWS BITES.

Update Aug 9, 2018: I have found 500 BAD NEWS BITES since Mar 29, 2018. The total now stands at 3,500 in three years. The Aug post has 500 BAD NEWS BITES, bringing the total to 4,000 problems in three years.

374. Lumpfish Useless for Eating Lice - Norway and Scotland: "The most recent review of lumpfish efficacy in Norway from 2016-2018 concluded that:"Our analysis revealed that sites using more CF [lumpfish] over the duration of a grow-out cycle did not have fewer lice on average,...”

Over time within sites, we found that (i) sites using more CF [lumpfish] early in the grow-out cycle were able to wait slightly longer (conservatively, a 5.2 week delay with 5000 CF stocked week-1) before conducting the first delousing treatment, and (ii) CF stocking events were followed, on average, by a small reduction in lice population growth rates. However, both effects were small and highly variable, and lice population growth rates remained positive on average, even when large numbers of CF were used (tens of thousands per site). Moreover, effects of CF on lice density tended to be short-lived, likely reflecting mortality and escape of stocked CF. Overall, the data indicate that while some sites consistently get good results from CF, there is also widespread suboptimal use. A better understanding of factors affecting CF efficacy in commercial sea cages is required to inform legislation and drive more efficient and ethical use of CF by the salmon aquaculture industry.

And, a paper on Scotland: showed a constant increase in lice prevalence despite increased lumpfish use. http://www.marinet.org.uk/salmon-farms-in-scotland-displaying-increasing-levels-of-sea-lice-infection.html.

255. Annual Salmon Trade Figures around the world. By Rabobank. Note the 89,000mt salmon from BC to the USA. 249. Staggering Licence Costs in Norway -  : https://ilaks.no/kampen-om-laksetillatelser/. For example: "Willingness to pay: High and very high.  The fixed price / minimum price of NOK 120,000 per tonne is equivalent to more than NOK 93 million for 780 tonnes. This is NOK 27 million more than the highest bid in the auction part of the 2013 round, where most of the permits were otherwise sold at a fixed price of NOK 10 million. In the 2018 auctions, winning bids ranged from 129,000 to 252,000 NOK per tonne. The latter corresponds to more than NOK 196 million for 780 tonnes. Nevertheless, virtually all available capacity was sold." What this means in CDN dollars is nok 196m X .14nok/$cdn = $27.4M, and as farms are usually 1000 tonnes, the Canadian cost per farm would be: $27.44 X 1000/780 = $35.2M. Staggering. And:As the Placentia Bay development is 11 farms, this means foregone revenue of $35.2 X 11 = $387.2M in an average areas, meaning lower than Placentia. And fish farms almost immediately begin asking for higher biomass.

"Animal cruelty claims against Cooke Aqua

"Unacceptable fish handling incidents," says Cooke CEO

Salmon "smashed and stomped"

"Sea of suffering" video

Once the darling child of salmon farming in Atlantic Canada, New Brunswick-based Cooke Seafood is facing claims of animal cruelty after a hidden camera video surfaced online showing live fish being stomped and smashed against steel beams,  fish suffering from fungal infections and spinal deformities and fish improperly anesthetized prior to being vaccinated. The video was filmed and produced by animal rights group, "Compassion over Killing"
Cooke has a history of poor animal health in its farms in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and elsewhere, with millions of fish ordered by government agencies to be slaughtered due to sea lice infestation, infectious salmon anemia, "super-chill" and other maladies.

CEO Glenn Cooke pleaded guilty with other company officials in 2012 of illegal dumping of cypermethrin pesticide in the Bay of Fundy, resulting in the deaths of thousands of lobsters in cages nearby.

In Washington State, a massive 2017 escape of salmon from Cooke facilities resulted in a ban in the region of open net pen fin-fish aquaculture. The farmed fish threaten wild fish stocks by spreading pests and disease, and increasing competition for food, habitat, and reproduction. The farms, accoring to opponents in the region, also directly discharge a slew of toxins like untreated fish waste and pharmaceuticals; attract and entangle marine mammals and seabirds; and marginalize wild-capture fisheries and coastal economies.

At one point, Cooke announced it would make its Nova Scotia headquarters in Shelburne, where, in exchange for a $25 million grant and loan program, it would build a salmon processing plant, employing 300-400 people. After accessing some of the loan/grant funds, Cooke subsequently renegged on the commitment to build the processing plant.

Currently, Cooke is facing strong opposition from citizens' group Protect Liverpool Bay in its plans for a major increase to its industrial salmon farm off the coast of Liverpool, Nova Scotia.

81. Iceland Against In-ocean Fish Farms - want them taken out of the water: https://grapevine.is/news/2019/09/13/a-pink-but-toxic-gold-rush/?fbclid=IwAR2P584YMRsCOeyRl0-Mtrj2Ufm1GoygOuvm0TO2a-bSV4JVbdaBLhHzxzo. Note that Ireland and Denmark have recently said in-ocean is to end, and five farms have been decommissioned in BC, Canada. Quote: "“When we look at the various ecological impacts, industrial-scale ocean aquaculture has, and all the risks associated with salmon farming in open sea pens, it is nothing short of baffling people are willing to make this gamble. The industry is a ticking ecological time-bomb.”" And: "If current plans for farms producing 71,000 tons are realized the industry would produce as much sewage as 1,136,000 people, more than three times the entire population of Iceland." And: "Jón points out that while all municipal sewage and waste from farming or other food production on land, including land-based aquaculture, must be treated before it’s released to the ocean, waste from open sea pens are exempt from such requirements. “They just dump all of this into the sea, as if the oceans were bottomless garbage and waste dumps. Which they aren‘t.”" And then there is the sewage that floats away to pollute the water column, not just what is on the bottom beneath the pens. And, about jobs: "“The spokesmen of sea pen farmers argue that the industry is crucial for creating jobs, a mantra which is then faithfully repeated by the politicians. But this promised job creation comes at the cost of other jobs in the tourism industry and the livelihood of thousands of people in rural communities. It’s a terrible economic policy to create jobs in one place by destroying them in another. Ironically we might not even be creating any jobs,” Jón adds.„”Growing automation in the sea pen industry will likely make this even worse.”" These are things I have been saying for years, about fish farming everywhere on the globe.

80. Citizen Science Contradicts Industry/Govt. Results - Scotland, look at the pictures of diseased and dying farmed fish, while industry keeps on saying they are healthy.: https://theferret.scot/salmon-vacasay-farm-whitewash/?fbclid=IwAR13xCiB2O5Gs5lO2qOQBtBdx5pcnOUWqKlVHVbIKGjMvUYbl7QVMP57Fks.

Here is a claim you will want to know: "“All farming has challenges but the survival rate of fish on farms remains high at around 99 per cent per month as reflected in the sector’s public reporting.” This sounds good until you start doing the numbers: an average farm has 600,000 fish. 1% is 6,000, per month or 12 X 6,000 = 72,000 fish per year, which is a lot, and in an industry wide figure, say for 100 farms, that means 72,000 X 100 = 7,200,000. Yes, more than 7 million per year. 99% isn't that good.

This is a telling post as it shows DFO and fish farms in the same corner arguing anything to avoid not putting PRV smolts into BC waters. Please note that this is at the same time that sea lice have been shown to be out of control in Clayoquot and Nootka sounds. This is also at the same time that DFO is trying to put together a FARM structure to do things with fish farms, but all three seem to have no connection. DFO needs to get out of the way, knowing 75% of BC citizens want fish farms out of the water.
