KEY DOCUMENT: INDEX 2015!

Before the Index, see this table of the chemicals in farmed salmon:

Now, the index for fishfarmnews for 2015 and late 2014. The purpose of the site is to list references, along with text so that you can go to the source documents and form your own informed opinion. 2015 will be remembered as the year of the tipping point for getting fish farms out of the pristine oceans they use as free open sewers.

Environmental damage, sewage, diseases, seals killed with a bullet to the head and so on will be ended when fish farms set up on land. Citizens who have to live with fish farms overwhelmingly reject them. This is happening all around the world: BC, Nova Scotia, NB, NL, Ireland, Scotland, Norway itself, Chile, Tasmania and etc. European countries in the Baltic Sea area have strict laws preventing fish farm setting up in the ocean.

The only way forward for the Norwegian-style fish farms is to set up on land or go back to Norway and set up on land. Norway is so fed up with their environmental damage, fraud, pollution, sewage, jail sentences that it is giving out on-land licences to get fish farms out of its ocean. This is a $9- to $12-million subsidy for each on-land licence because that is the auction price for in-ocean licences.

Time for Justin Trudeau and Hunter Tootoo to get fish farms out of the BC ocean and save wild salmon as well.

Here is the index for 2014 and earlier posts: http://fishfarmnews.blogspot.ca/2014/10/index-to-wwwfishfarmnewsblogspotcom.html.

Here is a very long litany of issues in the fish farm/seafood industry I have found in the last six months, including boom bust industry, the employees being the first to get fired, fraud, jail sentences, human slavery... it goes on and on: http://fishfarmnews.blogspot.ca/2015/07/key-document-fish-farm-news-bites.html.

On-Land Fish Farms In Europe - 8,159 Farms and Counting, Updated Jan 22, 2016

In a major, recent (2014?) report, AQUAFIMA, in the EU, looked at putting in in-ocean fish farms in the Baltic Sea Region, but the problems are so self-evident and possibilities so few - for legal, weather, ice, sewage, public perception, lack of sites, admin burden and so on - that this is really a report about the huge number of on-land fish farms already existing in Europe.

The total number of on land fish farms in Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Germany , Russia and Poland is, if you can believe it: 8,159.

These are in addition to the 127 on-land fish farms systems I have found in the world, comprising more than 10,000 actual farms. See: http://fishfarmnews.blogspot.ca/2012/01/key-document-34-mostly-on-land-closed.html.

What this means is that it is disingenuous for Norwegian fish farms to claim there are no on-land fish farms in the world, and that it is too costly.  I have now found, the better part of 20,000 on land farms. When is enough enough?

Well, right now. The government of Norway is so fed up with fish farm environmental damage that it is handing out free licences for Marine Harvest, Cermaq, Grieg Seafood, and the rest to get out of the ocean and set up on land. This is a $9- to $12-million subsidy per farm to be on land. And in BC, the Kuterra on-land fish farm cost $7.6 Million. This means it is cheap to be on land in BC, and there is no reason anymore for fish farms to be in our pristine oceans using them as free, open sewers.

Read my analysis of why we are at the tipping point for Norwegian-style fish farms: http://fishfarmnews.blogspot.ca/2015/12/key-document-tipping-point-goodbye-in.html.

The final recommendation in the AQUAFIMA report is this: The use of natural surface waters for aquaculture farms is nearly excluded and mostly forbidden due to environmental protection regulations and spatial conflicts in some regions. Therefore one might seek to introduce aquaculture systems that are land-based. Land-based systems offer the chance to raise fish close to markets.

This is what I have been saying for the past year. Now, if I can only figure out how to get a big grant from the EU for what I write to stand up for wild BC salmon, First Nations, and the people of BC.

Hunter Tootoo, and Justin Trudeau, please get fish farms out of the ocean.

I should add that Ian Roberts of Marine Harvest recently made the same claim: that on-land fish farms are too expensive, citing a cost of $20 Million. Well, this is miles over the Kuterra cost of $7.6 Million. I sent a note to Marine Harvest and they refused to give me the cost breakdown. Ola Helge Hjetland got back to my initial request, asking me why I wanted to know. I responded saying I am doing articles on the cost of on-land fish farms. Five subsequent requests received no response.

So it is almost 20,000 on land fish farms with Marine Harvest refusing to back up its estimate that over states the cost by 263%.

ISA, Fish Farms Must be Removed from Ocean - BC First Nations Tell DFO, Hunter Tootoo, Updated Jan 24, 2016

Like other aboriginals in the world, the Norwegian Sami, for instance, Canadian First Nations want fish farms out of the BC ocean and put on land - or they can go back to Norway and set up on land because the Norwegian government is so fed up with their environmental damage, it is handing out free licences to get Marine Harvest, Cermaq, and Grieg Seafood out of the ocean; this is a $9 to $12-million subsidy, an amount greater than the on-land Namgis fish farm cost in BC - $7.6 Million. It's cheap to be on land in BC.

All British Columbians want fish farms out of the ocean or they can go back to Norway and set up on land there.

In their own words:

Ocean Fish Farms – ISAV Virus Detected
Wild Salmon Defenders Alliance
www.farmed-salmon-boycott.com

Ocean Fish Farms – ISA Virus Bombs?

News of the first published evidence that a European variant of the infectious salmon anaemia virus (ISAV) is present in British Columbia is extremely disturbing.  The peer-reviewed study was published in the Virology Journal, a scientific publication from BioMed Central, a leading academic open access publisher in the areas of biology, medicine and health.  Co-author Dr. Rick Routledge said that the potential of the ISA virus to be contributing to widespread decline in sockeye salmon populations must not be taken lightly.  Dr. Alexandra Morton, independent biologist with Raincoast Research Society, stated, “This work gives B.C. and our U.S. neighbors the opportunity to avoid tragic consequences.”

“I’m so glad to see this paper finally published. I produced a documentary about exactly this issue in 2013 called Salmon Confidential which documents evidence of dangerous European salmon viruses including ISAV which have been introduced to our wild Pacific salmon through farmed Atlantic salmon eggs imported from Europe ,” added filmmaker Twyla Roscovich. "The film is free to view online for anyone interested in the backstory.”

River First Nations titleholders have never given their consent to have fish farms sited on the migration routes of Fraser River wild salmon, and have made clear their opposition to ocean fish farms for many years.  “We see too many wild salmon in our nets with open sores. Some look good on the outside but when we open them, we find numerous white and green balls that look like cancer cells. We burn these fish instead of throwing them back in the environment so the bears, eagles and other wild life don’t get sick. We witnessed too many pre-spawn deaths. This study adds to our grave concerns about fish farms, and they must be removed from the ocean,” asserted Shane John, a Katz First Nation fisher.

The Ahousaht First Nation made the historic decision in 2015 to have a fish farm removed from their territory.  “By not allowing this fish farm in our territory, we gave the wild salmon of the Atleo river a fighting chance to survive, and we protected nearby clam beds to feed future generations,” said Lennie John of Ahousaht First Nation.  “To me, this study reconfirms fish farms don’t belong in the ocean,” Lennie added.

This study warrants a call to action by all stakeholders. We must send a strong message to both the federal and provincial governments that we can no longer tolerate the ocean fish farm industry continuing to play Russian roulette with our endangered wild salmon.  Too much is at stake.  Business as usual expansion must stop. Open-net fish farms could very well be ticking virus bombs, and raises the spectre of wild salmon vanishing, with devastating consequences for biodiversity and the wild salmon economy.

To prevent this, we need to honor the precautionary principle by removing open-net fish farms from the ocean.  An emerging land-based aquaculture industry, properly regulated, would be a sustainable alternative to ocean fish farms, a solution whose time has come.  Government regulations protecting wild salmon from all industrial harm is also imperative.

Taxpayers Pay for Diseased, Dead Fish-Farm Fish, Fish Farms Don't, Updated Jan 17, 2016

The purpose of this post is to gather together some recent references on the amount of our taxes paid to fish farms companies for diseased dead fish, which they don't have insurance for, and which they should be out of the water to prevent.

From the Conservation Council of NB, Jan 12, 2016: http://www.conservationcouncil.ca/fish-farm-biosecurity-inadequate-to-protect-wild-salmon/.

From 1997 to 2007 some $140 Million was paid to NB fish farm for diseased dead fish. Then another $33 million taxpayer money was paid in NF for diseased dead fish farm fish in 2013.

This does not include the millions paid in BC for IHN, IPN and so on. I update these figures below.

This is the newspaper article that references the east coast payouts, nearing $140 M: http://thechronicleherald.ca/novascotia/1194343-fish-farm-culls-cost-public-138m. There are other figures in the article.

This is the newspaper article that references the NL $33 M, Jan 11, 2014: http://www.thetelegram.com/News/Local/2014-01-11/article-3571724/N.L.%26rsquo%3Bs-destroyed-salmon-tab%3A-$33M/1. There are a lot of strong words in the article, and like the NB article, the public in NL wants fish farms out of the water, or in impervious tanks.

Here is the link to the figures on my site for 2014: http://fishfarmnews.blogspot.ca/2014/09/93-million-for-diseased-fish.html. The total was $93 Million and includes BC.

There is some over-counting in the two larger amounts, but do note that you can add the $140M + $33 M + the BC money to get the total payout of taxpayer dollars. The BC money is $2.84 million for Cermaq, and $1.752 for Grieg Seafood, or $4.6 Million, meaning the total is about $177 Million taxpayer dollars for diseased dead fish farm fish for billion dollar corps from Norway. Canadians don't want to pay. They can set up on land or go back to Norway, where the government is so unhappy with their environmental damage it is giving them free licences to set up on land - a $9- to $12-million subsidy over the in-ocean auction price.

Here is the Telegram comparison with my figures: http://fishfarmnews.blogspot.ca/2014/09/93-million-for-diseased-fish.html.

Here is the article on the nitty gritty east coast costs, including the BC figures: http://fishfarmnews.blogspot.ca/2014/02/key-document-taxpayer-money-for.html.

ISAV in BC, Canada , Updated Jan 12, 2016

Sad but true, in addition to all the other problems with fish farms in the ocean, ISA has been detected in farmed and wild salmon in BC, as well as searun cutthroat trout. Fish farms need to be on land, or they can go back to Norway and set up on land because the Norwegian government is so fed up with their environmental damage it is giving our free licences, a $9- to $12-million subsidy, to get them out of the water. ISA was first developed in Norway in 1984 - only one issue.

Here is a good summary link that leads you to a number of the Exhibits at the Cohen Commission and historical documents on ISA in one spot: http://discoverynewvariantisav.typepad.com/.

And the Conservation Council of NB calls for taking fish farms out of the water because ISA, which has plagued the east coast industry, should not be allowed in the ocean anymore in net pens: http://www.conservationcouncil.ca/fish-farm-biosecurity-inadequate-to-protect-wild-salmon/.

As well, there are documents on Alexandra Morton's site for the date, Jan 9, 2016: http://alexandramorton.typepad.com/.

The authors are:
