Wild Atlantic Salmon are 99% Gone, Yes Gone

So, just how bad are things for Atlantic salmon?

Read this: https://www.ecowatch.com/amp/atlantic-salmon-is-all-but-extinct-as-a-genetically-eroded-version-of--1882190049?fbclid=IwAR1a9CvefO5BYqOwcILjWQsAC4UHfKvwxp-UYLSGF6yDQXC1LjhrQnL_XuY.

The paper puts it bluntly:

"Today, 99.5 percent of all native Atlantic salmon has disappeared from the wild. In Europe, Scandinavia and around the Baltic Sea, native indigenous salmon has vanished from the Russian rivers Neva and Narva, the Luleälven and Umeälven of Sweden, from the Odra and Wisla in Poland and the Vilia of Belarus. In fact, only 10 of the many rivers which empty into the Baltic arm of the northern Atlantic Ocean sustain wild salmon populations any longer and the wild Baltic salmon genome is the only one with natural resistance to the destructive Gyrodactulus salaris parasite.

Around the British Isles, in Ireland and across the pond to North America, wild salmon populations are extinct or endangered or threatened. The Kola Peninsula of Russia is known to be a current refuge for wild type Atlantic salmon, yet is also known to harbor military and radioactive waste at ecologically harmful levels. The grand Torneälven of Sweden, called Tornionjoki where it traverses Finland, is one of the last rivers to host wild Atlantic salmon in the world. (For more on the status of Atlantic salmon, see the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List map. Researchers at the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management have produced a report on the Baltic extinctions. Anna Tonteri, a conservation geneticist at the University of Turku in Finland has written an excellent doctoral thesis about the population genetics of north European Atlantic salmon)"

So, what lives on?

"More than 99 percent of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., live only as genetically eroded, hatchery stock fish today. That is a most sobering statistic considering the engineering of the Pacific Chinook salmon growth hormone into the Atlantic salmon genome (see my earlier article here). Whatever remnants still exist of our wild salmon populations must be protected without exception, especially given the potential introduction of a new, genetically engineered salmon to our frankly fragile food web"

And the outcome is?

"Salmon has been swimming upstream against the depleting force of “genetic erosion" for at least a century, a force that has claimed its wild genome, its clans and its tribes, its genetic diversity and which has nearly eliminated a once self-sustaining, powerful ocean species. Now, salmon cannot live without us.

Atlantic salmon is essentially extinct because we have demanded too much of this natural resource through over-consumption and environmental exploitation. The wild gene forest that once lived, the old trees, the towering antiquarians of genetic variation, are gone, lost in the fire of a rapid, wholesale, industrial Homo sapiens taking, consumed in an anthropocentric fire we could even see burning, when one looks at the timeline of scientific data."

According to this article, fish farming needs to stop in oceans to prevent the final nip of genetic diversity out there from being eliminated.

Greg Taylor: Holding DFO to Account on Endangered Chinook - Watershed Watch - Updated Nov 19, 2020

Go read the Watershed Watch take on dangerously declining chinook salmon [the rest are not doing well either]. They have much to say that is useful: https://watershedwatch.ca/greg-taylor-holding-dfo-to-account-on-endangered-chinook/?mc_cid=1f4d80c698&mc_eid=5777c92bcd.

Here is my comment on their short document, as in do read what they have to say.

DFO and the SFAB set the annual rec take, It is now so low the industry is having trouble surviving. ENGOs should have a member of theirs who also fishes attend SFAB meetings and get the information that is used each year. If the rec fish were stopped that would be up to a $2.52B loss for the economy. The solution here is to immediately put out 12 ocean netpens of 2 million chinook fry each, each of which is diploided or triploided and fin clipped. The most important from immediate killer whale (SRKWs) food is the Cowichan because they circle the Strait of Georgia for a year or more before going offshore.

Netpen fish cannot spawn, do not return to rivers, but to the saltwater site of the netpen, where an Indigenous fishery could mop up the returnees, with the excess for others. This would save the SRKWs and put fish that can be distinguished by the missing adipose fin, for retention. There is no damaging of genes because they cannot spawn. But DFO needs to be pushed because they tried putting 35M Vedder chinook, that will return in four years. That means SRKWs go south for 4 years with no food. The netpen approach puts fish in the water right now. Also, along with the Robertson Creek and Cowichan stock, the Nitinat should be used too. At the terminal end the sexless returnees should be picked up in big buckets by helicopters, and, go directly to an already-identified SRKW pod (reduces the transit time from pick up to drop off) and drop them in front of them so they have food as of this September and every year hence from the netpens. If we don't do netpens, because DFO has been managing salmon into extinction for 50 years, it will just finish the job with their too little too late approach, and the SRKWs will die, too.

The BC govt needs to start a new program under the Wild Salmon Secretariat directly aimed at habitat restoration and get on with the job that DFO has failed to do. Delivered through the Pacific Salmon Foundation who leverages cash 4 to 7 times, a sizeable restoration program for in river work by those 300,000 sporties who believe in bringing salmon back, along with our ENGO allies.

Note that the $142M cash from DFO and BC pretty much is utilized for such big, expensive, longterm projects, that virtually no money is going to the endless list of small, inexpensive projects required across the province to get sporties/ENGOs in streams with their gumboots on, where the bulk of all restoration work is needed. And thus immediate rehabilitation of at peril salmon stocks.

As well, fish farms need to come out of the water. I list shows 320 on-land farms already around the world, so this is easy, not hard. And my list of global press now approaches 500, as in the enthusiasm for on-land is unmistakable.

Now an update. The WWS's take on fall 2020 spawning is here: https://watershedwatch.ca/greg-taylor-an-overview-of-2020-salmon-returns/?mc_cid=e211356752&mc_eid=5777c92bcd.

It is not easy reading, with runs very low across the province.

BAD NEWS BITES - 5,500 Problems Now Heading to 6,000 Problems - Updated Dec 2, 2020

I receive 30 global press fish farm/seafood industry newsletters every week. In these, I have found a startling amount of bad news, and decided to do a post on it. I had no idea there was as much bad news as there is. This is my 14th post in three years. And the last post ended at 5,500 problems, as I put 500 in each post before starting a new one.

Some days I am stunned by the amount of bad news in the fish farm/seafood industry.  Find the fifth BAD NEWS BITES post here: http://fishfarmnews.blogspot.ca/2017/05/bad-news-bites-fifth-post.html. And that reaches 2,000.

This is the link to the fourth post, Jan 14, 2017, it has 500 BAD NEWS BITES in it: http://fishfarmnews.blogspot.ca/2017/01/bad-news-bites.html. it has links to the previous three posts since July 2015. You can find earlier ones at these links.

This is the link to the ninth post, March 29, 2018: http://fishfarmnews.blogspot.com/2018/03/bad-news-bites.html.

This is the link to the tenth post, Aug 9, 2018:  https://fishfarmnews.blogspot.com/2018/08/bad-news-bites-aug-20-2018.html.

Here is a summary of the bad news stories:

"In one mouthful, here are the kind of stories I am finding: boom bust industry, billions made and lost, crisis in lice and disease, bankruptcy, workers fired, executives jumping company to company, dividing big bonuses, fraud, corruption, litigation, conflict of interest with government and scientists, using the ocean as a free open sewer – $10.4 Billion in BC alone, killing of whales, seals and sea lions – more than 12,000 in BC so far, slavery, unpaid labour, taxpayers paying millions for diseased, dead fish – $177 Million in Canada, dueling scientists, weakening of laws, unsustainable feed, illegal fishing, jail sentences, disasters in Norway, Scotland, Chile, Canada, bullying of scientists, governments and anyone critical of their business, cartels, collusion, price fixing, fishing down the food chain to Antarctic krill, carcinogens and persistent organic pollutants, fluoroquinolones, chicken feathers in feed, animal feces in feed, eutrophication in a time of global warming, Malachite Green fungicide in USA seafood, fake industry awards, all the wild salmon in the Pacific ocean, more than a billion, put in peril... it goes on."

Update, Dec 11, 2017: I found 500 BAD NEWS BITES in less than 3.5 months. That means well over 1000 in a year. That is how much bad news there is in fish farms/seafood industry. This post, the sixth, may be found here: http://fishfarmnews.blogspot.ca/2017/08/bad-news-bites-salmonseafood-industry.html.

Update, Mar 29, 2018: You will find the previous posts on these dates: 23/1/2018, 11/12/17, 29/8/17. 5/5/17, 14/1/17, 1/7/16, 6/5/16,  1/7/15, and a total of nearly 3,500 BAD NEWS BITES.

Update Aug 9, 2018: I have found 500 BAD NEWS BITES since Mar 29, 2018. The total now stands at 3,500 in three years. The Aug post has 500 BAD NEWS BITES, bringing the total to 4,000 problems in three years.

Update May 3, 2019: the BAD NEWS BITES starting on Dec 20, 2018 - the eleventh post, brought the total to 4,500 problems. And the 12th post, starting May 3, 2019 brought the total to 5,000 problems by Sept 6, 2019. The Sept. 9, 2019 post brought the list to 5,500, and this is the next, 14th, post.

One final thing, as Mitsubishi owns Cermaq, we need to stop buying Mitsubishi cars as well as their environmentally-damaging fish.

                                                                     ***

Here are the BAD NEWS BITES starting Feb 12, 2020. This 14th post will bring the total to 6,000 problems when it hits 500:

"In addition to the 489,000 fish starting to be culled now, Cold Ocean Salmon has been forced to remove millions of fish due to ISA incidents this year. ISA affected two sites with 845,000 salmon in July. In the same month, the virus was discovered at another Cold Ocean Salmon farm affecting 340,000 salmon. Back in January 483,886 were removed from a site in the same area for the exact reason. In May, it lost 20,000 trout due to "an accident" aboard the wellboat “Ronja Carrier”. The lumpfish have been dying like crazy as well. Marine Harvest also has MILLIONS of fish in cages with ISAv found on the sites...and refuses to cull the entire sites. How is this allowed for one company? How does removing one cage from a string of cages all tied together equal good disease prevention, when history shows us, it is not. How many repeated back to back ISAv outbreaks must a site have before it is properly fallowed or the licenses revoked? Some of the current ISAv sites have had THREE back to back stocking cycle complete meltdowns starting in 2016. This smacks of regulatory capture by the companies of government (a co-investor, no less, in this nightmare)."
From a social (laid off workers, upset tourism operators, in-fighting within fishing families), economic (make work projects, lost taxes, lost profits, expensive government oversight), or environmental (disease and lice spread, wasted wild fish used as feed, wasted and abused antibiotics, toxin dumping, coastal nutrification, innumerable trickle escapes, predator attraction, etc etc) view, our open net pen industry is out of control and a total failure...and has been for YEARS. We are growing LESS fish every year using MORE resources. The local pelagic wild fish eg herrring and salmonid stocks have been decimated. A new pacific strain of a rainbow trout disease (VHSv4a) has also been loosed into our bays wiping out herring stocks.

250. Fake Closed Containment - BC, Clayoquot Sound, they are not impressed: https://www.westerlynews.ca/news/environmental-group-unswayed-by-salmon-farmers-semi-closed-containment-plan-near-tofino/?mc_cid=7949597edc&mc_eid=5777c92bcd. "“This is probably the single-largest change in cage infrastructure to be implemented on the coast of this province in about 40 years. It’s been no small task to take this step. We’re trying to find a pathway forward here to continue to be responsible farmers of sustainable protein for British Columbia. This is a good step in the right direction. There will be other steps to follow, but this is where we’re heading in the short term.”

The change is virtually nothing. For example, the farms will go on polluting this UNESCO World Heritage water, as part of an industry that costs the BC public $10.4B for its sewage at the most conservative cost. Next, this is no largest scale change, that is silly. On land is the real change hapening in BC with several salmonid companies. And in Norway, this is considered a relatively small no-change change.

That its been no small task to take the step, this is also silly. Norway doesn't consider this design much of a change. All you have to do is build the sewage offloading cage and put it in the water. This is not new. It's the same old thing.

As for, they're trying to find a way forward to be responsible and bring to BC sustainable protein. This is also false, they continue to put the road blocks in the way of moving to land and sequestering their sewage. That would be responsible. And they don't bring sustainable protein to BC, as 85% of BC farmed salmon is sold in the USA.

AS for its a step in the right direction, this is false. Moving to land would be the step in the right direction, and its practiced all around the world, with so much on-land being put in in the States, aiming for 400,000 tonnes, which is four times the BC output and will kill the only market for this BC fish product. Atlantic Sapphire is aiming at 160,000mt alone, and Nordic Aquafarm, Whole Oceans, and a third, among them aiming for 100,000 as a first step, and will be moving from the north east, Maine, to California. This is happening right now.

The BC industry is actually a good decade behind the responsible people who will take away their entire output, resulting in everyone in BC losing his or her job, unless they move to on-land as well.

"At one time, diseased fish were destroyed and the industry was compensated by government for the loss. In 2012, Cooke aquaculture received $13 million in compensation for diseased fish which were being raised in Shelburne County. The Canadian Food and Inspection Agency began regulating this industry in 2005, and in 2013 they decided that they could not continue compensating the industry for their losses. At that time, they decided for the first time to approve the sale and processing of fish with this “flu-like” virus and we began seeing it in our supermarkets and fish retailers.

"After each cull of virus-infected fish, the public was assured by the industry, the provincial government and the Canadian Food and Inspection Agency that the consumption of these salmon posed no threat to human health. No science or studies related to human consumption of virus-infected salmon has been produced to back up this claim. There is also no requirement for retailers to properly label virus-infected salmon so that Canadians could understand what they were purchasing and consuming. Tons of this virus-infected salmon have been sold in Canada because the U.S., one of the biggest importers of farmed salmon, will not allow it to be sold in that country."

"The recent Nova Scotia Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture decision to give a 20-year permit to Cooke Aquaculture to raise farmed salmon in Liverpool Bay is both devious and reckless and is likely to result in the raising and selling of virus-infected salmon in the province.

All hearings, public presentations and other activities related to salmon farm expansion have been put on hold due to Covid-19, yet the minister responsible, Keith Colwell, approved Cooke's application for a lease renewal, ignoring both strong public opposition and warnings about the hazards created by this industry."

And: "At one time diseased fish were destroyed and the industry was compensated by the government for their loss.  In 2012 Cooke aquaculture received $13 million dollars in compensation for diseased fish which were being raised in Shelburne County. The Canadian Food and Inspection Agency began regulating this industry in 2005 and in 2013 they decided that they could not continue compensating the industry for their losses."

The first quarter harvest volume was 9,036 tonnes gutted weight (Q1 2019: 15,787 tonnes). Volumes were negatively impacted by a challenging biology in 2019 continuing into the first quarter of 2020 and lower production, reported Mowi." And: "“The biological situation in our Scottish farming operations has been challenging since mid-2019, with several issues including Pasteurella Skyensis, PD, algal bloom and sea lice. This has coincided with a period of record high sea water temperatures and many winter storms." And, this article covers Mowi's global operations, including Canada west and east.

Article has info on how stocks have plummeted and may go extinct. "Bev Sellars, the former long-time chief of the Xat’sull (Soda Creek) First Nation based in Williams Lake, says that she and many others have been warning FOC since the 1970s that Fraser salmon are in trouble. She’s frustrated that the warnings of Indigenous people, particularly on the upper Fraser, have not been translated into FOC action." As I have been saying: “If there’s any hope for [Fraser] salmon, the fish have to be put front and forward, and everything they need to survive needs to be looked at,” she says. “If things don’t change, salmon are already in trouble, and in a few years, they are going to be gone completely.” Fin Donnelly: "Former federal NDP fisheries critic Fin Donnelly concurs. He is now rallying government, First Nations, NGOs, labour and the private sector to raise $500 million to restore salmon habitat and “climate proof” the entire 21 million-hectare Fraser watershed (more than a quarter of B.C.) over the coming decades."

"MSC concerns with B.C. included deficiencies in monitoring (e.g., knowing how many fish return to their natal streams), unclear hatchery-wild fish interactions, and insufficient information about the fish being caught accidentally when specific salmon are targeted. “This was all really basic, fish management 101 stuff,” says Taylor. “And they couldn’t do it.”"

59. High Carbon Footprint of Farmed Salmon - : https://heated.medium.com/scots-say-your-salmon-is-ruining-their-environment-590c213bcbda. "While the carbon footprint for Scottish farmed salmon sold in the EU can be as low as that of chicken, the footprint jumps when that same salmon is flown to the U.S. or Asia, according to Friederike Ziegler of the RISE Research Institutes of Sweden.
Ziegler and her colleagues found that fresh gutted salmon airfreighted from Norway to Tokyo had a carbon footprint higher than that of domestic pork and cheese. Given Scotland’s proximity to Norway, the carbon footprint of flying its salmon to Asia would be comparable, Ziegler said." And Andreason of Atlantic Sapphire, on-land fish farm, Florida: "Moreover, he said the benefits of his concept outweigh the risks: The carbon footprint of his farmed salmon is half that of salmon farmed in ocean net-pens. His salmon won’t need antibiotics or be exposed to sea lice. Nor will they escape and breed with wild salmon. Their waste is treated within the facility."

In Norway, fish farmers spend 500M Euros per year on lice.  "Between 10% and 15% of Norway’s farmed salmon die of stress caused by the sea lice treatment. Just 5% are directly killed by the parasites, says Davidsen." And: "
Up to 30% of adult wild Atlantic salmon exposed to areas full of fish farms die as a result of the lice." And: "Salmon farmers spend between 5 NOK (€0.5) and 8 NOK (€0.8) per kilo of salmon dealing with the sea lice problem, says Davidsen. ‘It should be around 1 NOK (€0.1) to be sustainable,’ he said.  And: the global impact: Some authors have estimated their total economic impact at between $1bn and $9.6bn a year globally, says Dr Ariadna Sitjà-Bobadilla, director of Spain’s Instituto de Acuicultura Torre de la Sal (CSIC). And: "Many parasites do not kill fish, but they affect their growth and weaken them, making them more prone to dying from stress or disease." And: "Rising sea and river temperatures are boosting many parasite populations that thrive in and around fish farms, says Dr Sitjà-Bobadilla. Some are also spreading to more northerly regions as a result, she says."
